The bookbinding style you choose can influence the user experience considerably, and we’re here to help you make the right choice for your project.

Below we’ve outlined the most popular bookbinding styles and their most common uses to help you determine which is best for your project.

Spiral Binding

In this popular bookbinding style, holes are punched at the spine and bound with a plastic coil. One of the primary user benefits of a spiral bound book is that the pages can be opened a full 360 degrees (cover to cover). This method is popular for important documents, resource guides, and any instance in which the reader will be using the book heavily, or intends to make photocopies.
Most common uses: academic workbooks, commercial manuals, notebooks, cookbooks, calendars

Wire-O and Concealed Wire-O Binding

This wire-o method utilizes square holes that are punched at the spine and bound with wire, enabling the pages to lay completely flat. The concealed wire-o method uses the exact same method but includes an added cover that allows the book’s title to be visible on the spine when on a shelf. The wire-o binding style is cost-effective and a popular choice for information-based books that are used heavily.
Most common uses: cookbooks, manuals, and stationery products such as diaries and planners

Saddle Stitch Binding

Saddle stitching is a simple bookbinding method that utilizes staples to bind the pages of the book. This style is suitable for both self-covered books (where the cover stock, or paper, is the same as the text) and books with separate covers. This extremely cost-effective binding style works best for full-spread and full-bleed images as well as text since there is no gap between pages. These books are often referred to as booklets and have a lower page count.
Most common uses: magazines, periodicals, booklets, and catalogs

Perfect Binding

Perfect binding is the most typical bookbinding method for commercially produced books. The spine is glued or threaded together, then adhesive is applied to the paper, creating a durable bond. It is similar to the hardcover binding method but much more cost-effective as it is more economical than traditional hardcover binding. This is often the best solution for higher page count books where saddle stitching or squareback binding isn’t possible.
Most common uses: corporate reports, catalogs, product brochures, manuals, magazines

Squareback Binding

Squareback binding is an affordable solution in-between saddle stitching and perfect binding, combining the security of a saddle-stitched spine with the improved appearance of a perfect bound square spine. The only downside of this style is the limit of the number of overall pages possible, which makes this option best suited for shorter books.
Most common uses: reference books, children’s books, text books, coffee table books

Yes, ask your account manager about the different color options we have for spiral and wire-o binding.
How do you need the files to be set up?

Send your book artwork as 1up PDF files, which simply means having one page of your book on each PDF page instead of as spreads.
How do I set up my file for saddle stitch binding?

When setting up a booklet for saddle stitching, you need the page count to be a multiple of 4 pages.
What size can I make a catalog or booklet?

We can recommend some standard sizes, but you can generally choose any size for your book to be. We do have maximum paper sizes, so be sure to ask an account manager if the size you want is doable.
What is the minimum number of books I can order?

We do not have a minimum quantity of books that you are required to order. However, we do require a $50 order minimum.
